Hans Brinker Budget Hotel | NetherlandsSelf claimed promotion, “World’s Worst Hostel,” has become popular amongst curious backpackers. Their creative PR ads boast about elevators that are out of order, free candy wrappers on your pillow and basement bar with no fresh air and limited lighting, have hit the world with lightning speed popularity. It’s possibly the worst yet the best hostel in the world.

Riviola Cinema Hostel | PortugalThis cinema-themed hostel has 13 guest rooms decorated according to a film’s theme or director. From cartoons to drama, this hostel has everything you need including an Oscar winning roof top deck. Grills, blown up pools and hammocks overlook the city streets. If seeking a quiet evening, watch one of many movies located in the common area–who would have thought a DVD library would be available?

Hostel Celica | SloveniaOnce a military prison, now a vibrant youth hostel featuring hardwood floors and single beds (good for those who don’t like top-bunk surprises.) The hostel dedicates its design and atmosphere to art, music, and philosophy. With 20 jail cells, choose between a shared or “cell for two.” Each cell has its distinct “flavor” and features photography exhibitions, musical events and the all-you-can-eat buffet. This hostel has been voted “hippest hostel” by Lonely Planet.

Jumbo Stay | SwedenFor those who hate flying, stay grounded while sleeping  high in the sky in this Boeing 747 jet located at the Stockholm Arlanda airport. The jet consists of 27 rooms, café and bar. Snuggle in a four-bedroom dorm or book the private cockpit suite. The suit includes luxuries such as breakfast, TV, Wi-Fi and private bathing facilities.

Carbisdale Castle Youth Hostel | ScotlandThis maybe the only time in your non-royal lifetime, to sleep in a castle. Built for the Dowager Duchess of Scotland, this castle has homed wealthy pocketbooks and bathed royal behinds. It even served as royal refuge at one point in history. Now a youth hostel, the interior was decorated with art, Italian marble and even housed a local ghost. The castle closed in 2011 because of repairs and encourages hostellers to keep an eye if it will ever re-open.
