The City of Adrenaline: What To Do In Queenstown, NZ

Queenstown, New Zealand

Queenstown is full of ways to throw your money away. It’s a place to gamble, not only with your hard-earned cash, but also with your life. And while there’s always the likelihood of both financial and bodily ruin, the potential for personal glory in New Zealand’s premiere adrenaline junkie town is profound. Whether you want to plummet through the air like a falcon, careen down white water rivers or just drink, gamble and meet fine folks from all over the world, you can do it all here. Some of our favorite activities are outlined below.

There’s something disquieting about jumping out of a fully functional airplane, or running off of a cliff edge attached to a big kite, or getting dragged 600 feet above the lake by a speedboat. But these are things to live for, and if you manage to overcome the premature senility these activities may induce, then you’ll be all the better for participating in them. For those of you who like to see a rapidly approaching earth while attached to a lifeline that should save you, check out NZONE Skydiving, Coronet Peak Tandems, Paraflights Queenstown and AJ Hacket Bungy for all of your human flight needs.

Maybe you’re not into heights, but you still like a thrashing wind whipping at your face in a frenzy of speed and movement. No problem. Head to the Kawarau River and hop aboard a Thunder Jet. You’ll scream through tight sections of the river at 90 km per hour and perform a series of speedboat acrobatics. You can also go canyoning, river surfing, and dirt biking if the Thunder Jet isn’t enough for you.

We would never encourage the use of intoxicants, but if that’s your thing, the Queenstown nightlife scene is a seven-days-a-week affair. People make the pilgrimage to the city of adrenaline from all over the world, and the opportunity to meet some unique individuals is made easy at the bars and clubs. Searle Lane is a great spot for late nights, while Morrison’s Irish Pub has a more laid back feel. If you really want to mix things up, head to SKY CITY Queenstown Casino. That’s what I did, but I have to warn you, it was a terrible mistake.

Obviously, all of this can take its toll. There’s only so much gut-drop intensity a person can take. Luckily, if you have the cash, Queenstown can also pamper. First head to Onsen Hot Pools for relaxation, and then make your way to Frankton Therapeutic Massage. After a day of this, you’ll be ready to jump back into the mix.

Queenstwon is a place where you can do pretty much anything – not anything in the Cambodia, shoot-an-M16-at-an-innocent-cow kind of anything, but who wants to do that anyways? It’s a place for fun, energy, and socializing. It’s set in a remarkable location where the adrenaline is rivaled only by the surrounding beauty.
